Saturday, March 12 Kassie and I flew out of Minneapolis at around 10:15 AM. Icy wings delayed our flight by about 45 minutes. We arrived in Portland and got a rental car. It was a spiffy little Chevrolet Cobalt LS with satellite radio, which was nice...
We arrived at Corey, Tara and Cayden's house in Cornelius and had a snack. Cayden was sporting a pretty swell shirt that his dad made.
We relaxed the rest of the day and went to bed pretty early.
Stopped for coffee on the way to church.
Then we went to Cannon Beach,
and made sure we knew where we were going if we felt an earthquake.
We drove down the coast, planning to get to Pacific City by dinner time.
Corey and I went to the Pelican Pub and Brewery the last time I visited and I wanted to go again. It's right on the beach and I love the view. We ate, which was pretty entertaining...
Then we watched the sun set from the beach just outside the restaurant.
Before Corey, Tara and Cayden went home, we bought some rabbit food at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda, which is across the street from the Pelican. There are a bunch of tame-ish rabbits living in a park there.
Kassie and I had a room in the hotel. Here is the light switch in the bathroom:
See, the thing is, for my convenience, and their building costs no doubt, there was no fan installed in the bathroom at all. There was a vent that one might normally find a fan behind, but it led straight to an air duct.
Here's the view from our room.
We got some coffee (chai for me) and walked around the beach.
Kassie and I left Pacific City and decided to meander up the coast to Cannon Beach. We'd passed through a lot of small coastal towns that we thought we'd like to check out. But Kassie saw a sign for a national park that she wanted to see. It was great. There was a big lake that was filled by the ocean and a huge stretch of undeveloped beach on the ocean. There weren't many people around at all. We saw a sea lion, but it was dead.
We spent quite a while at that beach, then we headed back north toward Cannon Beach. We stopped at a fish hatchery.
We stopped at the Cape Meares Lighthouse
and the Tillamook Cheese Factory.
From there, we went to Cannon Beach, did some shopping, ate and went back to Cornelius.
Meanwhile, back at the house, it appeared Cayden had been busy in his playroom...
The Japanese Garden was really cool.
This is from the Japanese Garden. You can see Mount Hood in the background. We didn't make the time to get to the mountain. Ohhhh yeeeeeaaahhhhhhh. They have dogs. Here's Jambi.
Wednesday, March 16 My friend Rick lives in Oregon. Kassie and I met him for lunch. It was great to see him.
Then we went downtown.
I wanted to see the beautifully-renovated Central Library.
Lucky me, they were showing a William Joyce exhibit! This is from my favorite Joyce book, The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs.
By the time we got to the Oregon Maritime Museum, it was pouring and we were soaked. Plus, it was closed. So we drove back to Cornelius and got some pizza.
Thursday, March 17 Corey and Tara took the day off work and we had errands to run. We stopped at Nike World Headquarters. (Both Corey and Tara work for Nike.)
Just waiting for Tiger to pick it up...
Then we went to NW Portland to do some shopping. We walked by this church, and you can see that the trees were in full bloom. They smelled and looked wonderful...
That night we went to the Crystal Ballroom to see The Decemberists. We parked in a seedy garage across the street:
The Decemberists' equipment had been stolen that morning, but thankfully, they are from Portland and were able to find enough gear to play that night. (Their trailer and merchandise were recovered in Clackamas, but their equipment is gone. If you feel so inclined, you can help them out here...)
Friday, March 18 We flew home.
